Men's bones can benefit from calcium, too

It's not just girl talk anymore. Men, too, should know that calcium is the mineral to mind for building rock-solid bones.

As men age, they too run a greater risk of brittle bones and breakage (though not quite as high a risk as women). But new research suggests that taking in about 1,000 milligrams per day of calcium is all it may take for guys to build and keep up their sturdy scaffold. This new finding hails from a study of 48 men aged 21 to 79. Researchers found a link between higher calcium intakes and increased bone density at the hip and lower back. This particular link had never been reported before in either men or women (British Medical Journal, May 26, 1990).

That amount of calcium isn't out of reach and is right on par with the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance---800 to 1,200 mg. You can start boning up at the calcium-rich dairy case. Pick up low-fat and nonfat milk, yogurt and cheeses. If these foods don't suit you, go green. Dark green veggies, such as kale, collards and broccoli, all offer ample supplies of calcium. And one of the best things for your bones is---what else?--- bones. The soft edible bones of canned sardines and salmon may also help keep your frame fit.
