Women who opt for tubal sterilization--America's most common contraceptive procedure--are 70% more likely to develop painful ovarian cysts.

Researchers uncovered the link in a study of more than 1,000 women ages 18 to 39. Cutting the fallopian tubes--the thread-thin passageways from ovaries to uterus--may affect the flow of blood to the ovaries in ways that promote cysts, says study author Victoria Holt, PhD, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Large ovarian cysts can be very painful and may require surgery, so women who consider sterilization should be warned about the risk. "I don't think most doctors know about it," says study coauthor Janet Daling, PhD.
