As we have seen, elevated homocysteine levels are associated with rapid and extensive atherosclerosis. The studies found that diabetics with the earliest age of onset and poorest metabolic control had the highest homocysteine levels.

Diabetics also have problems with recurring infections and poor wound healing. The flavonoid curcumin (extracted from turmeric) remarkably enhances immunity, and promotes white blood cell proliferation and wound-healing. Vitamin C, zinc, and the B vitamins also play a role in wound healing, especially in the diabetic.
