Omega-3 oils help alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia

In another study from Washington University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, thirty-seven patients with bipolar disorder were either given supplements containing a low dose of N-3 fats (1 to 2 grams a day) or diets devoid of additional N-3 oils. All patients were experiencing persistent irritability despite ongoing psychotherapy and psychotropic drugs before the supplementation. Those taking the N-3 supplements demonstrated a significant reduction in irritability.

The authors of the study suggested using N-3 oils to reduce irritability in other psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. A recent review found that five out of six double-blind, placebo controlled studies discovered a significant benefit of using DHA in schizophrenia.
