Max Barn, a physicist, once said: "There is no better method of determining the basic laws which govern us than by the ideal one of using the greatest possible simplicity." Dr. Johanna Budwig has used his words as a guiding principle in her research of fats and their effects on the body. For over 40 years, she has worked to educate the public and medical establishment about research on fats and oils, research that proves the necessity for highly unsaturated, unprocessed fats in order to maintain health. Three of her lectures have recently been published in North America in a pamphlet called Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases.

Dr. Budwig was the first to develop methods for distinguishing between saturated and unsaturated fats. Budwig has used unprocessed flax seed oil and nutrition to cure serious illnesses including cancer. Her methods have attracted the ire of the medical establishment and food processing industry. At one point, she was legally challenged by three professors of Germany's Central Committee for Cancer Research for asserting that cancer growth-inhibiting treatments such as radiotherapy and hormones were not only ineffective, but detrimental. The presiding judge declared that "Doctor Budwig's documents and papers are conclusive. There would be a scandal in the scientific world, because the public would certainly support Doctor Budwig." The case was dismissed. Dr. Budwig has been nominated for a Nobel Prize seven times for her work on fats and healing.

In Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases, Doctor Budwig links several diseases to impaired fat metabolism. Heart infarction, for example, is characterized by solid fat encircling the heart muscle. In rheumatic disease, the presence of fat in a diseased muscle is the "only factor" that differentiates it from a healthy one. Over 35 years ago, the large electron microscope at the Cancer Research Institute in Paris permitted the discovery that the only substance that distinguished cancer cells from healthy ones was the presence of fat in the cell nucleus, cell body and cytoplasm. Budwig quotes Nobel prize winner H.V. Euler of Stockholm as saying that "if we were to reduce the many and varied forms of cancer to a common denominator, we would then say, the living body lacks the ability to assimilate fats."

Diabetes, skin ailments, kidney, liver and gall bladder disease, as well as behavior problems and early sexual maturation are also linked to impaired fat metabolism. A body's inability to assimilate fat results from the lack of highly unsaturated fats, found in flax seed oil, and from the suffocating presence of commercially processed fats and oils.
Dr. Budwig asserts that unsaturated fats are fundamental in recharging the electro-magnetic field found in the human body. Unsaturated fats are chains of fatty acids with approximately 18 links. Some of the links easily allow an association with proteins; this makes the fat water-soluble and allows it to permeate the entire body. Highly unsaturated fats generate a field of electrons, "a veritable electrical charge, which can be quickly conducted off into the body, thus causing a recharging of the living substance - especially of the brain and nerves." These electrons attract oxygen and stimulate our breathing. The electrons also attract photons from sunlight by means of magnetic fields, caused by electron movement. She states: "The resonance in our biological substance is so strongly set to absorb the sun's energy that those physicists, the quantum biologists, who concern themselves with this scientifically complex field, say that: There is nothing else on earth with a higher co ncentration of photons of the sun's energy than man."

The mechanism whereby unsaturated fats attract oxygen and photons is also responsible for food decay. The entire purpose of preservatives is to prevent fat combustion, to prevent the attraction of electrons to oxygen. Fats that are commercially treated to prevent oxidation lose the ability to combine with protein and become water-soluble. They also lose the field of electrons that attracts photons. The body is forced to find some place to deposit the unusable, processed fats - around the heart, in muscles, in cells - thus, creating disease. Doctor Budwig recommends adding flax seed oil to the daily diet and deleting preserved foods.

Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases revolutionized my thoughts about fats. Read it. Try the dietary changes that Doctor Budwig suggests. The simplicity of her theory holds great truth.

SUNLIGHT AND DIET

It was the research of German scientist Dr Johanna Budwig that proved it is actually the lack of the essential combinations of fatty acids and protein in the skin cells, not sunlight, that promotes skin cancer. When the skin cells are not adequately nourished and protected the sun's rays can be damaging rather than healing.

In her book Photoelements of Life (printed in Germany) Dr Budwig explained the nature of sunlight "photons" and how vital energy in the form of "light-formed electrons" is accepted by biochemical receptors in living cells. Especially human cells.

Combining her knowledge of physics, biochemistry, pharmacy and medicine, Dr Budwig reached a conclusion that modem establishment science has been reluctant to acknowledge: that electron-rich fats "resonate with the wave-length of the sun's fight and control the entire scope of our bodies' vital life functions." (see alive #109)

She stressed how the oil and margarine industry provides the wrong fats, which are the ones mostly widely consumed. According to her they are killing people.

"We need the nourishment of the sun's electrons in the form of fresh, sun-ripened foods," Dr Budwig stated. "One of the foods richest in electron content are oil-bearing seeds, such as flaxseed, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds and the seeds of evening primrose. These oils are rich in essential fatty acids, which is where the electrons are found. Flax seed oil has the highest percentage."

It is when we eat these foods that we are able to benefit from the healing rays of the sun without fear of cancer.
"A doctor may tell a patient to stay out of the sun because he or she can't tolerate it," she explained. "This is essentially true. However, as soon as these individuals are placed on my oil-protein diet they tolerate the sun much more readily."
Now well into her 80s and living and practising in Germany, Dr Budwig is still known as "The Linseed Lady" because of her advocacy for flax seed oil as the best source of essential fatty acids. Editor
