PC SPES

PC SPES

A prostate cancer product, PC SPES is manufactured in China and includes several herbs and other nutrients. Unfortunately, it was also found to contain 3 manufactured drugs: diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic hormone, which can cause blood clots, a blood thinner, and a third manufactured drug. PC-SPES was taken off the market and may still be off of the market. Some doctors think that it was the DES that was allowing so many prostate cancer patients to be cured. This brings up the issue: if DES is taken out of PC-SPEC will it still work?

Anti-tumor effects of PC-SPES

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among males in developed countries. Surgical removal of the prostate effectively cures the primary disease but the metastatic disease is resistant to most forms of chemotherapy. This study investigates the anti-proliferative and anti-tumor effects of an herbal preparation, PC-SPES, which is a refined powder of eight different medicinal plants. PC-SPES administered as a food supplement caused a dramatic decrease in prostate specific antigen levels in some prostate cancer patients with advanced disease. Dietary PC-SPES at levels of 0.05% and 0.025% did not exhibit any toxicity with no significant difference in food intake at the end of six weeks. Dietary PC-SPES exerted a dose dependent inhibitory effect on both tumor incidence and rate of tumor growth when tumors were induced in rats in the lung and lymph nodes. The number of lung metastases in animals on PC-SPES that showed no primary tumor growth had no metastatic lesions in the lung. The significant anti-tumor effects of PC-SPES suggests a therapeutic benefit of this herbal food supplement and may be a useful adjuvant to conventional therapeutic modalities.

PC-SPES INHIBITS PROLIFERATION OF PROSTATE CANCER CELLS

Studies from throughout the world that can help you live longer

Management of prostate cancer that has spread beyond the capsule is a difficult problem. One innovative and nontoxic approach to the disease is a commercially available herbal mixture called PC-SPES. It has shown potent antitumor activities on a variety of malignant cells in vitro, and shown to inhibit clonal growth, and to induce cell cycle arrest of human prostate cancer cells. In this study, researchers looked at the effect of oral PC-SPES (250 mg/kg/day) on growth of tumors present in male immunodeficient mice. The results showed that PC-SPES markedly inhibited clonal growth of prostate cancer cells by 50% and the growth inhibition mediated by the extracts remained after removal of PC-SPES. In vivo treatment with oral PC-SPES of male mice having tumors produced significant inhibition of their growth, with no objective side effects including blood chemistries, weights, or autopsy analysis. Thus, PC-SPES inhibits clonal proliferation of human prostate cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo in mice.
