Smoking and skin cancer

Medical/Nutrition Update

If the threat of lung cancer and heart disease isn't a scary enough reason to give up cigarettes, here's another: smoking has now been linked to recurrence of a common skin cancer. In a multi-center, five-year study of more than 1,800 smokers and non-smokers with a history of various skin cancers, there was "a clear increase in recurrence among smokers with squamous cell cancer (SCC)," says Robert S. Stern, M.D. The study concluded that cigarette smoke may act directly on the skin as a carcinogen and may generally weaken the immune system.
