Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Self Care, The Montgomery Method, video and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Prevention & Treatment, 3rd Edition.

Kate Montgomery's extensive research and passionate concern about carpal tunnel syndrome led her to create a drug-free, non-surgical treatment program. It is based on the understanding that one of the main causes of carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain injury (RSI) is the loss of biochemical integrity, and that recreating alignment is the solution.

Information in Montgomery's book and video on carpal tunnel syndrome is remarkably organized. She includes a checklist of signs and symptoms, and makes suggestions on proper care.

The directions for the basic muscle tests (Phalen's, Tinel's applied kinesiology, and grip strength assessment) are well-illustrated with drawings and photos, as are the self-care exercises later in the book.

Additional resource lists are in the back, including RSI organizations, newsletters and support groups. Because of its depth and specificity, the information will help many people, from those who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and RSI to those who treat RSI -- including doctors and hand therapists who are interested in alternative therapies; chiropractors; and beginning and advanced massage therapists.

Montgomery's book is one that I would share with my doctor because it is well-researched and factual. It also covers several forms of health maintenance, including acupressure, strengthening exercises and self-alignment.

The only exercise I might do differently is the elbow alignment, as joints are delicate in hyperflexible people (women going through hormonal changes such as PMS, pregnancy or menopause would be most at risk of overstretching). I would recommend something more gentle. Unraveling twisted fascia with massage, stretching and isometric strengthening may be a safer approach for that special population.

The video evolved out of the book, and shows a 12-step body maintenance program. The video enhances the book, although the book contains more detailed information. I found Montgomery's book and video immensely useful and recommend them to the massage students in my hand care classes.
