Scratchy Throat? Try Fresh Pineapple!

"At the first sign of a sore throat, I add fresh pineapple to my diet. I've been doing this for 10 years and have not had a full-blown cold since!"

Charles Horvath, Portland, ME Last March, we described pineapple's potential to soften and remove corns. While many people consider it simply a delectable fruit, it plays a medicinal role in some cultures.

"Mexicans use pineapple for bronchitis; Venezuelans use it to soothe sore throats; and the indigenous people of Brazil use it as a decongestant," says Prevention advisor and clinical herbalist Douglas Schar, DipPhyt, MCPP, MNIMH. "Historically, pineapple was a Central American sore throat cure-all."

Research on bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple, shows it to be anti-inflammatory and mucolytic, meaning it has the capacity to take the red out of a fiery sore throat and eliminate mucus, Teresa Graedon, PhD; coauthor of The People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies (St. Martin's Press, 1999), says that eating pineapple for a sore throat meets her criteria for deciding whether or not a remedy is worth a try: "It certainly can't hurt; there's scientific reason to believe it could help; and more than one person has reported its usefulness," she says.
