SECRET (NATURAL) INGREDIENT

When life gives you lemons… you're in luck. This citrus star shines as a cold remedy, stomach soother, and more

1 Cold buster
Sore throat? Stuffy nose? Harold Pillsbury, MD, a professor in the department of otolaryngology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says, sip on this: 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 1 ounce bourbon, 1 tablespoon honey, and ¼ cup hot water.

2 Stomach soother
To nix nausea or morning sickness, add the juke of 1 lemon to a glass of water or simply suck on a lemon slice. Kathy McManus, MS, RD, director of nutrition at Brigham and Women's Hospital, says some of her patients swear by it.

3 Odor easer
Working with onions or seafood can leave hands pungent. Neutralize the odor with lemon, advises Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, Health's Senior Food and Nutrition Editor. Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon sugar, then massage into hands.

4 Nail brightener
To remove polish stains, rub nails with a lemon slice until the stain lifts. Lemon's acidity helps break down polish pigments, and its antioxidants brighten nails, says Robert Cleary of the Dashing Diva nail salon in New York City.
