Learn about serotonin's role in depression.

What causes depression?

Causes of depression:

This video will briefly examine the biological cause of depression.

The biological cause of depression is championed by:

--Big Pharma (Pharmaceutical Industry)
-- Psychiatrists

The pharmaceutical industry and psychiatrists believe that a chemical imbalance in the brain is the primary cause of depression. Big Pharma and psychiatry believe that pills can be used to change people’s thoughts, feelings, behavior. [PICTURE: Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Museum]

Big Pharma and psychiatrists believe that depression can be controlled by one class of antidepressants called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Some SSRI drugs include Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox.

But according to the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the side-effects of SSRI drugs include:

-- increased suicidal thoughts
-- increased homicidal thoughts
-- headache
-- nausea
-- drowsiness
-- weight/appetite fluctuation
-- changes in sexual behavior
-- increased feelings of anxiety or DEPRESSION

-- mania
-- emotional instability
--abnormal thinking
--alcohol abuse
--lack of emotion
--paranoid reaction
--amnesia, confusion, agitation, delirium, delusions, hysteria, psychosis, sleep disorders

You take an antidepressant hoping it will help you with depression, but you could end up with more problems because of the side effects.

Dozens of studies have shown that:

-- Exercise
-- Placebos (sugar pills)
-- Mediation
-- Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Are just as effective as antidepressants.

The worst thing that can happen when you take antidepressants is that they work! Because now you can become dependent on them to solve your problems.

The withdrawal symptoms can be nasty. [PICTURE: VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE]
The majority of suspects in U.S. school shootings were on antidepressants or were trying to get off them.

The majority of mass murderers in the U.S. in recent history were on antidepressants or were trying to get off them.

Again, SSRI stands for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. The keyword is SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN, SEROTONIN.

When it comes to depression, the effects of serotonin is the main research target for the pharmaceutical industry. What is serotonin? Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the transmission of nerve impulses.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers within the brain that allow communication between nerve cells. Serotonin is also found throughout your body.

Serotonin is also known as “The Molecule of Happiness”, and “The Wonder Drug.” Serotonin regulates your thoughts, mood, behavior, sleep, and appetite.

The problem with SSRI drugs is that they try to maximize the use of serotonin that already exists in your brain. SSRI (Selective SEROTONIN Reuptake Inhibitor) drugs do *not* introduce new serotonin into your body or brain.

In the past 50 years, studies from Japan, Europe, and North America have shown that low levels of serotonin in the brain can cause depression, aggressive behavior, bipolar, impulsiveness, addictions, and sleep disorders.

Where does serotonin come from? Serotonin comes from an ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID called L-Tryptophan. L-tryptophan is an ESSENTIAL amino acid because it *cannot* be produced by your body. You must obtain it from your diet (the food you eat). Some foods that contain L-Tryptophan are milk, turkey, poultry, bananas, eggs, and salmon. What you eat foods that are rich in L-Tryptophan, the conversion process is:

Food source --> L-Tryptophan --> 5HTP --> SEROTONIN

Vitamin B is also essential in the conversion of L-Tryptophan to serotonin.

Serotonin has been cited has the most important neurotransmitter in the study and cause of mental disorders. These days, foods do not contain enough L-Tryptophan because the way they are grown and what is used to grow them (pesticides, inorganic soil, fertilizers, hormones), so you may have to take L-Tryptophan as a dietary supplement to get enough serotonin.

The theory that mental illnesses and diseases are caused primarily by the foods we eat has been around for hundreds of years. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.

SSRI drugs are dangerous because they try to mimic nature, but with a twist: They try to improve on nature., and that is where the side-effects are coming from. “Mother Nature knows best.”

Depression-Free, Naturally: 7 Weeks to Eliminating Anxiety, Despair, Fatigue, and Anger from Your Life. Larson, author of the bestselling Seven Weeks to Sobriety, believes that many doctors misdiagnose nutritional imbalances as psychological disorders. She argues that most people who are depressed, fatigued or addicted to food, cigarettes or alcohol suffer from a deficiency of vitamins or amino acids that is only exacerbated by drugs like Xanax, Prozac and lithium. Larson provides checklists of symptoms, possible disorders and corrective formulas along with simple but thorough explanations of how the biochemistry works. She plausibly links biochemical emotional problems with the gradual shift in the American diet over the past 60 years toward sugary, carbohydrate-laden and processed foods, which disturb the body's insulin production and deprive the brain of much needed vitamins and nutrients. The author urges readers to seek out doctors to run lab tests in order to identify possible deficiencies, blood-sugar abnormalities and food allergies. Occasionally, Larson's advice gets lost in her sales pitch for her Health Recovery Center in Minnesota ("The nutrients used at Health Recovery Center are the best quality we can find"). Still, anyone who has suffered from mental lapses, mood swings and stress will find plenty to mull over here.

You can also take 5 HTP which is the precursor to serotonin. By taking 5 HTP, one step is eliminated. As the video shows

Food source --> L-tryptophan --> 5 HTP --> Serotonin

5 HTP also comes as a dietary supplement in a bottle.

In the brainstem, the most primitive part of the brain, lie clusters of serotonin neurons. The nerve fiber terminals of the serotonergic neurons extend all throughout the central nervous system from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord. This neurotransmitter is responsible for controlling fundamental physiological aspects of the body. In the central nervous system (CNS), serotonin has widespread and often profound implications, including a role in sleep, appetite, memory, learning, temperature regulation, mood, sexual behavior, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, and endocrine regulation. Not only does this bioamine control physiological aspects of the body, but it also has an involvement in behaviors like eating, sleeping and aggression. Serotonin has been noted to produce an inhibitory effect on the nervous system that calms, soothes and generates feelings of general contentment and satiation.

Not surprisingly, serotonin is implicated in a broad range of serotonin disorders like depression, schizophrenia, and Parkinson's disease (3).. Serotonin deficiencies have been one of the factors to blame for ailments such as anorexia, bulimia, obsessive compulsive disorders, migraines, social phobias and schizophrenia. (9). (12). I am not taking a stance that serotonin has its hand in all of these different pots, but after the research that I have completed for this paper, I feel comfortable talking about serotonin in reference to depression. No one can say for certain what exactly "causes" depression. But in this paper, I hope to give further insight into serotonin's specific role as a possible predeterminant for major depression and some hopes for those suffering from this illness.

If you need a high dose of serotonin, it is better to take 5 HTP than l-tryptohpan because research has shown that 5 HTP converts 70% to serotonin. Whereby l-tryptophan only 3-5%.
